This may sound simple, but there is more to being a great listener than you think. Being an active listener starts with being attentive. Then it’s important to ask questions and further clarification on anything that doesn’t make sense. Your clients understand their issues differently than you do and don’t always have the right terminology to express their desired outcome with their landscape. Summarizing their needs and repeating back to them what they’ve asked for is a great way to understand what your client is looking for at the job site.
It’s a good idea to set reasonable outcomes instead of over-promising what you can deliver. If your client has product or technical questions that you don’t know the answer to, be honest with what you do know and follow up with the complete answer.
