There are many elements to consider when designing residential landscape lighting. For this month’s blog post, we want to focus on a few elements that will help you make a strong visual statement with outdoor lighting.
As you begin your design plan, think about the impression you would like your visitors to have when arriving at the property. Which areas do you want to draw attention to, which areas are best kept in shadow, and what are your security needs? It’s important to remember that people are attracted to the brightest light source when making your landscape lighting design plan. Do you want to feature the front door? How can you highlight certain trees, sculptures, or water features? Will bright security lights over the garage distract from the rest of your property? You don’t want to overpower one area so it’s difficult to see the rest of your home and landscape.
Get creative and use different lighting fixtures throughout your landscape. Consider well lights at the base of columns versus down lights to illuminate columns from above. Both add drama in a different way. Use multiple up lights to illuminate trees, rocks, or statues from different angles to show dimension. Also, don’t forget to consider the security needs of the property. Adding a variety of light fixtures can create an inviting atmosphere and add safety to the property.
It is important to consider the size of your light fixtures in comparison to your landscape. In addition to size, other factors to consider are color, brightness, and overall feel of the light fixture. All of these components can either help the light fixture blend into your landscape or help it stand out as a decorative element.
When you take the time to craft a landscape lighting design plan and choose the appropriate fixtures, you can create a welcoming and dramatic atmosphere. At Watersavers Irrigation we carry the top landscape lighting brands and would love to help you with your next project.
